Lonely Planet Rocky Mountains (Rocky Mountains, 3rd Ed)
Published in Paperback by Lonely Planet (June, 2003)
Average review score:

Get your money's worth in one dayI just finished a trip to Wyoming and Montana for 2 weeks and was impressed with the utility of this book. I did a mix of camping and staying in hotel rooms, and this book did an excellent job of listing the hotels in each town and the prices. Several times, after I finished some hiking/camping, I looked in this book for nearby towns and went to a town and hotel that the authors listed as being good, but inexpensive. No need to go to Holiday Inn anymore! For the bigger towns, they list only the more recommended hotels - I made the mistake of stopping at one hotel off the highway that was not listed in this book, but was cheap, and ended up at some dive. --- Hey, learn from my lesson.
I also used the book very broadly to review my options for where to go hiking - I had previously gone to all the National Parks in the region and wanted to go to the national forests this time. I picked out the Bighorn Mountains/Cloud Mountain Wilderness from the description in this book, and liked it. (Note that it only gives a broad description of attractions, I also bought a topo map and trail guide once I got to the Bighorn Mountains). It appears that all attractions (restaurants, bars, hotels, various cultural attractions)are listed similarly.
This is an exceptionally informative and organized book.
A Norsemans Journey to Rocky MountainsI had the opportunity last year to visit the Rockie mountains. Mainly Colorado and a fast trek throught or should I say to Montana. Having bought Lonely Planets books on both Australia and South Africa earlier (trips that didn't come to fruition, yet) and also having enjoyed some of the tv programs from the same people I thought this would be the best bet for my trip. And it sure was. Now most of my stay in this erea was in Denver so maybe I could have just bought a book on Denver, but as much as I enjoy travel books they tend to be a bit expencive and this offered more value to me. An the books offers more than adequate information on Denver and it's immideate surroundings. Later on the book gave me what information I needed during my brief stay in Montana. The book also informed well about the strain of arriving in the Mile High City (Denver) when you are a lowland dweller, so it didn't come as a shock. Good thing that ! I'm going back to this region of the US, you can count on that and this book will come along on the next trip as well.

Moved-Outers
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (June, 1945)
Average review score:

The Moved OutersThis novel, dealing with the conflicts and predjudices encountered by a Japanese American family during WWII, is an excellent novel to use with middle school students post 9-11. My students were able to look at the lives of the characters and make perdictions and assessments of how Americans of Arabic decent might be treated as a result of the color of their skin and suspiscions of many around them. A great book to read in a time of great prejudice and hostiliy.
sensitive, early minority-topic bookSue is a typical American high school senior who suddenly becomes atypical in December 1941, upon the bombing of Pearl Harbor. When your family name is Ohara, the government doesn't care if you are U.S.-born and a child of American citizens. Sue and her family are interned in a prison camp along with thousands of other Japanese-Americans accused of being spies for Japan. How Sue and her family deal with being Americans in an American that doesn't trust them is handled sensitively, and gives an interesting view of a little-discussed (and shameful) era of our history. A Newbery Honor book.

Noble Conspirator: Florence S. Mahoney and the Rise of the National Institutes of Health
Published in Hardcover by The Francis Press (04 September, 2001)
Average review score:

A Woman For All SeasonsLong before Ralph Nader and Common Cause became successful public advocates, Florence Mahoney worked for decades behind the scenes in Washington to shape federal policy on children's health issues and medical research. Her influence extended from the years just after World War II to the last years of the 20th century, through Democratic and Republican administrations alike, and her legacy today includes the United States National Institutes of Health. While raising two sons, she developed the intimate dinner party to a fine art of political influence, always fighting for federal assistance aimed at curing and preventing disease among children and adults alike. A fascinating biography of a woman who deserves to be known much better than she is.
Ms. Florence Mahoney is truly a heroine to rememberNoble Conspirator: Florence S. Mahoney And The Rise Of The National Institutes Of Health is the compelling biography of a singularly remarkable woman and her decades of unpaid advocacy for governmental biomedical research. Her legacy that is with us to this day is the National Institutes of Health, or NIH. Noble Conspirator is filled with anecdotes, courage, and the growth of the fledgling NIH into a gigantic complex with an annual budget of $16 billion in the new millennium. Noble Conspirators is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the history of medical research in America, political success stories of nonprofit lobbying, or biographies of women who helped to shape American society into what it is today. Ms. Florence Mahoney is truly a heroine to remember.

Notes on nursing
Published in Unknown Binding by Brandon/Systems Press ()
Average review score:

The original nursing textbookFlorence Nightingale was the first "modern" nurse. Her methods were revolutionary in her time, and they form the basis for the techniques of patient management that have been taught ever since. This volume is a great overview, in her own words, of her ideas on care, cleanliness, and the nursing process in general. Her directives are widely applicable today. Anyone interested in the healthcare process, nursing, or notable women in history would do well to read this little volume. Highly recommended.
Excellent referenceMuch of what Florence Nightengale is still pertinet today when you get back to the basics of nursing. Excellent commentaries by various authors at the beginning of the book provide insights on how Nightengale's thoughts and theories apply to modern nursing.
This book started on a young wealthy girl, named Florence. Her sister, Parthe, would always have parties and meet new people. Both of them would never have to attend school or even read any study material. However, Florence was different. She enjoyed reading and studying. She hated dolls, parties, and when guests came to visit her family, she would never greet them or even try to get to know them. She would just lock herself up in her own room. Sometimes, she even felt like as if she was a monster, for she was the only girl around who hated parties and whatever the other girls loved to do. No one, except for boys would have interest in study. As soon as Florence grew older, she tried to attend Medical School. Her parents were worried, for the tradition in her family was never to study, and when you grow older, you marry a rich and wealthy man and give birth to family. But Florence had no interest in it. The more she read about Medical, the more she determined to help the poor, and sick. When she was young, she pretended to heal ill people with her dolls. So now and then, she would visit the poor and ill and clean their huts, feed them, and accompany them. Rumors started about her, like, why would a wealthy girl like her, help filthy people? But she ignored all of them. Her dream was to help people, and she did. After secretly sneaking out of the house, she trained herself as a nurse. As soon as she was professional enough, she opened her own hospital, called the Nightingale Hospital. During World War II, many of their soldiers were injured, and Florence and her nurses were there at their needs twenty-four/seven. They called her the "Lady-with-the-Lamp." It became so famous that Florence was getting popular. Later in her life, she meets a gentlemen. They fall in love, however, Florence could not marry him, for she believed that if she did, her dream of taking care of injured people would be ruined, and she thought that it was more important. The Nightingales, soon accepted Florence to own a hospital and help people when she was successful. Although Florence is different, she is different in a unique and special way.
This book inspired me to be someone like Florence Nightingale after reading.
